2. Polarity (Phase) Test
Test if your speakers are wired correctly (+/-).
How to interpret:
- In Phase: The bass should be strong and the sound should come directly from the center (between speakers).
- Out of Phase: The sound feels "hollow", lacks bass, and feels like it's coming from "everywhere" or behind you.
Why test Polarity?
If one of your speakers has the positive (+) and negative (-) wires swapped, it will push air while the other pulls. This cancels out bass frequencies and destroys the stereo image. This is called being "Out of Phase".
Troubleshooting
- Headphones: Usually wired correctly. If "Left" plays in your Right ear, wear them the other way around!
- Speakers: If the "Out of Phase" sound has more bass or a stronger center image than "In Phase", one of your speaker cables is likely reversed.
