Understanding Dice Types

In tabletop gaming, dice are referred to by the letter "d" followed by the number of sides. Here are the standard dice types:

  • D4 (4-sided): Tetrahedron shape, numbered 1-4. Used for small damage rolls.
  • D6 (6-sided): Standard cube, numbered 1-6. The most common die in all games.
  • D8 (8-sided): Octahedron shape, numbered 1-8. Common for weapon damage.
  • D10 (10-sided): Pentagonal trapezohedron, numbered 0-9 or 1-10. Used for percentile rolls.
  • D12 (12-sided): Dodecahedron shape, numbered 1-12. Used for heavy weapon damage.
  • D20 (20-sided): Icosahedron shape, numbered 1-20. The signature die of D&D for ability checks.
  • D100 (100-sided): Also called percentile dice. Usually rolled with two D10s.

Dice Notation

Dice rolls are written in a specific format:

  • 3d6 means "roll three 6-sided dice"
  • 2d10+5 means "roll two 10-sided dice and add 5"
  • 1d20-2 means "roll one 20-sided die and subtract 2"
